Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art developed with the concepts of leverage and technique at its core. Because it is easier to dominate an opponent by using the floor to assist in balance and control, most of the training in BJJ takes place on the ground. Being able to dominate and neutralize a larger, more aggressive opponent is a hallmark of the art. This is achieved through ground control positions and leverage-maximizing technique.
BJJ students develop a deep understanding of the mechanics of the human skeletal and muscular systems. Using this knowledge they are able to subdue an attacker without causing him injury, should they so choose. Acquiring these skills is not easy, and requires mental and physical effort on the part of the student. The rewards however, are great, and include massive improvements in stamina, strength, flexibility and mental clarity. In addition to this, social skills are improved as a result of interacting with individuals and the group as a whole.
Roger Gracie is a world-famous practitioner of BJJ and MMA. He is the grandson of one of the founders of the art, Carlos Gracie. The Gracie family has been the driving force in the growth of BJJ and the revolution in the martial arts community. Roger has put together a team of instructors from Brazil and other parts of the world, all trained to the highest standards of BJJ instruction. Together, they teach the Gracie family’s system of BJJ at the world famous Roger Gracie Academy in London and our associated schools throughout the UK and the rest of the world. The Roger Gracie Academy is well known for the exceptional atmosphere that is fostered there. All of our members are treated as part of a big family and the result is a relaxed and enjoyable place in which to train.
Classes take place six days a week from Monday to Saturday. We offer more classes than any other Jiu-Jitsu academy in Europe, so you are sure to find class times, which suit you.
What do the Classes consist of?
The sessions consist of a strength and endurance building warm-up, followed by an explanation by the instructor of a specific technical skill. Students then grapple with others of similar skill level in controlled sparring matches. Some have described BJJ as “chess on a mat”. It is an incredible workout that will challenge and strengthen the practitioner both physically and mentally.
What do I need to start training?
Please feel free to stop by our academy. You are more than welcome to watch one of the classes or better yet, try one of the free introduction classes. We are confident that BJJ will have a positive impact on many aspects of your life. Through it you will receive confidence, body-awareness and a new social circle of exceptional people.
